2039 A.D.

Zero remains buried in the rubble of Skull Fortress; Protoman and Roll have long since disappeared. A major earthquake strikes the northeast US, causing severe damage to several major cities. Dr. Light's laboratory is reduced to rubble, though X's capsule remains intact.

2047 A.D.

The thirty years required for the automated test of X's internal systems comes and goes; X remains buried and undiscovered.

2063 A.D.

Climate change and the aftermath of a third World War have left Earth in an inhospitable state. As society rebuilds itself, scientists of the day focus on technologies to repair the damage, ease the strain on Earth's natural resources, and safeguard the remaining populace. Underground and domed communities are experimented with, as are a small number of orbital colonies which ultimately prove to be unsustainable. Robots are still widely used for construction work and other, more dangerous tasks, but none anywhere near as advanced as Dr. Light's HRAs have been built since his death.

2071 A.D.

The United Earth Government is formed after many years of conferences, negotiations, and treaties. The vast majority of humanity is willing to accept the fact that without unity, the human race is doomed to perish. As work continues to heal the damaged planet, leftover weapons and materials from the war are either repurposed or disposed of via stellar incineration--using the decommissioned space colony Eurasia as a staging ground.

2084 A.D.

Breakthroughs in recycling technologies and atmospheric restoration are put into practice. Terraforming stations are strategically placed around the globe to stabilize the climate.

2100 A.D.

Sixteen years sees significant improvement in Earth's condition; reconstruction begins in some surface cities that were abandoned after the war. At an archeological site in New York, X is finally uncovered after eighty-three years by an ameteur roboticist named Rupert Cain. Though primarily a paleobotanist, Cain considers himself a student of all sciences and takes it upon himself to study X's design. Upon activation, X has a very innocent, child-like personality; within six months he's matured to the level of a human teenager, doing an excellent job of proving that Dr. Light and Dr. Wily's designs were a complete success.

2104 A.D.

By this point in time X's personality has fully matured and Dr. Cain feels that he's studied the robot's circuitry well enough to use it as a template. X agrees to become Dr. Cain's assistant and with his help, production of Cain's aptly-named 'reploids' begins mid-year. After initial testing of the first new-type HRAs is successful, a reploid factory is constructed, soon to be followed by many more.

2109 A.D.

A number of reploids have begun to turn uncontrollably aggressive, and some have even started attacking people. After recovering one of the rogue androids, Dr. Cain discovers the problem--a dormant instability in the reploid neural matrix design. When triggered, this instability causes anything from slight aggressive tendencies to full-blown insanity in reploids. Cain is unable to find what causes this instability to trigger but it's a potentially disasterous discovery, considering that hundreds upon hundreds of reploids have been created. Cain roots the problem out of his newest reploid models, but reports of his creations going berserk continue to come to him.

2110 A.D.

The rise in robot numbers leads to a rise in robot-related incidents. Criminals can use robots, rogue androids are still a problem, and even healthy reploids can be as violent as the worst humanity can offer. In response to these 'maverick' automations, the Maverick Hunters are formed to police reploid-kind. Their leader Sigma is one of the most powerful robots ever created, and considered to possibly be Dr. Cain's ultimate creation. Sigma soon becomes known for his efficiency, strength, and compassion.

2113 A.D.

Sigma has thus far achieved a perfect operating record, and is well-liked. Meanwhile, Dr. Cain has made noteworthy progress in HRA realism; they've practically become full artificial humans by this point, as not only are parts of their bodies semi-organic, but they can also experience hunger and fatigue. Like a human, the organic parts of their bodies require nourishment and rest.

2114 A.D.

A team of archaeologists begin excavation of a buried lab facility in the southwest United States. The facility turns out to be Dr. Wily's fortress. Within days of starting to excavate the interior of the complex, they inadvertently reactivate Zero. Unstable after a century, she goes berserk and slaughters anyone within her reach. Several of the archaeologists escape and call for the Maverick Hunters; of the two units dispatched, one unit is wiped out entirely by Zero. Most members of the second unit are severely damaged.

Sigma orders the other Hunters to hold their positions and faces Zero by himself. Zero slowly gains the upper hand and Sigma is critically damaged before Zero's systems evidently crash, leaving her on her knees screaming. Sigma is quick to take advantage of this and uses what little strength he has left to deactivate her. Once he exits the complex he orders the other Hunters to take Zero to the repair center for study. The virus intended for X has infected Sigma, though he shows no outward sign initially.

2115 A.D.

Zero is repaired and reprogrammed as a Maverick Hunter. Her personality is abrasive (though she takes a liking to X) and she relies largely on brute force to get her job done, but she quickly becomes one of the most efficient Hunters to date, possibly even more so than Sigma himself. A rash of incidents leads X to join the Maverick Hunters himself, where Sigma takes notice of him. Zero and X are teamed up over the next several months. They inadvertently discover that Sigma, believing X far superior to any of Cain's creations, has been arranging maverick incidents in order to test the ancient robot's mettle. His cover blown, Sigma outright declares war. Several high-ranking Maverick Hunters join his cause for the sake of awakening X's potential, leaving Zero and X in command of the remaining forces.

En route to one of his targets, X discovers a capsule with a holographic simulation of Dr. Light inside. X establishes a dialogue with his late creator and receives blueprints for a suit of armor intended to upgrade him to full combat capacity. X calls in a recovery team to take the capsule--along with the blueprints--back to Hunter Base as he continues his mission. X and Zero eventually locate Sigma's stronghold and assault it directly. Though X is equipped with Light's new armor, a fierce opponent manages to disable him and Zero is destroyed while buying time for him to recover. X is devastated by the loss of his friend, but his rage is utilized well against Sigma, leading to the Maverick's destruction.

2116 A.D.

Sigma's remaining followers are still being mopped up six months later. X fights to put an end to the war, but a group of Mavericks calling themselves the X Hunters have appeared and are making things difficult. X learns while taking them on that they've retrieved Zero's remains and reconstructed her specifically to target him. X barely survives when she manages to hunt him down, but is able to deactivate Zero and take her back to Dr. Cain for repair. Once she's restored, she delivers the alarming news that Sigma has also been resurrected by the X Hunters, and she was privy to his location before X retrieved her. The two of them confront him and destroy him.

2119 A.D.

A maverick reploid scientist named Doppler has started a second war. Through the course of events, X and Zero discover that Sigma's AI has become a computer virus, and exposure to him is causing reploids to go maverick. They manage to help Doppler regain his sanity, and he designs an anti-virus program intended to destroy Sigma; though it evidently works, the Hunters remain uncertain and on edge. Mid-year, they begin to receive reports of X-series reploids going Maverick, but the reports are sketchy and none of the reploids seem to be registered.

Zero is sent to intercept one such reploid, a female with red armor, as she haphazardly attacks a busy freeway. Zero notes the maverick's suspicious declination towards directly killing people, but doesn't manage to call her on it as shortly into their fight, Zero's systems crash much like when she first fought Sigma. The red Maverick escapes, disappearing completely and leaving Zero deactivated on the highway. The Hunters later learn the mavericks they've been fighting are cybernetically altered humans, and several of them fit the description of recent missing person reports from the International Bureau of Investigation. Also revealed by the IBI was the purpose of the apparent kidnappings--an overzealous group boycotting the continued existence of reploids had planned to use the 'maverick attacks' as a ploy to further their cause. Zero inquires as to the identity of her target, but learns only that she was a girl from Germany named Kristina Levin.
